National Hug A Bear Day

Yes. Today is an official excuse to cuddle a bear. And not the wild animal, big claws, long teeth type of bear. Because that could lead to an extraordinarily bad day.

No, today is about celebrating the furry little companion you have had by your side for most of your life. They are fuzzy and warm, they watch over us at night and keep the monsters under our beds away. They always have a listening ear, and unlimited cuddles.

Teddy Bears are often the first gift that we are ever given, and many of us carry them into our adult lives as reminders of our past. We seem to outgrow them, we rarely cuddle them, but still... we keep them.

Because the truth is they make our lives a little better, just to know that our childhood protector, our best friend, is still close to us. The idea of throwing them away, or donating them is unthinkable, and so they stay with us. Maybe now at the side of our beds, maybe on a shelf or in a wardrobe. But they stay.

The stuffed toy is thought to have originated as far back as Ancient Egypt. But we know for certain that they first started appearing in the 1830’s. Of course, the most iconic plush toy – The Teddy Bear, came about in 1902, when American President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt was hunting, and refused to shoot a baby bear. The term ‘Teddy’ derived from the President’s name, and since that day, has been the childhood toy given to almost every child.

There are thousands of Teddy Bears made every year with different colours, styles, themes and furs. Our very own Dodl Bear is truly a one of a kind bear. He was created as a kindness ambassador, to be a constant reminder of goodness, care, love and kindness to his companion. He also gives brilliant cuddles!

Whatever bear you have, make sure to give him a cuddle today. Get him out of the wardrobe, sit with him on your sofa and remember the bond you and your fuzzy defender used to have.
